Are you getting the most out of Instagram as a marketing channel?

The growth in this channel in the last few years has been widely reported and businesses have taken note. How it is used to generate brand awareness, website traffic and/or sales is another matter.

Sticking with marketing activities and channels that are proven to convert is a familiar theme as clients demand results and clear ROI points.  Social media has its place and this has certainly changed for the better in terms of actually working for a business.

It’s a given that Instagram is a great tool for engaging users, but what else can you try to get results?

Video For Engagement

Instead of delivering flat images on Insta, why not try some video content and actually have some fun with it! Users love it.  Have you heard of ‘Stop Motion’ or Stop Frame Animation’? It’s reported that a large number of users watch social video without sound and so your video needs to engage in other ways.

There are tools you can download so that you can create these on your phone, Lifelapse and Stop Motion Studio are two examples but there are others. Some big brands have been using this for a while with great success. Have a look at these accounts on Insta and see what they’re doing; Starbucks, Sephora, Spanxs.

Instagram Nametags

Use Instagram Nametags as your business card to encourage users to follow your account. This is akin to a business card and can be scannable so that when you are out and about, people can scan your insta-card to get to you faster. here’s how to create one:

  1. Open Instagram on your phone
  2. Tap your profile icon then click on the hamburger menu
  3. Chose from ready made designs, take a selfie, upload your logo
  4. Make it fun and engaging

How to scan a Nametag

  1. Open Instagram on your phone
  2. Tap the camera icon in the top-left corner or swipe right into the camera.
  3. Make sure the nametag you are trying to scan is visible in front of you.
  4. Hover your phone over the nametag, then hold on the camera screen until the nametag is captured.

User Generated Content (UGC)

Are people talking about your brand, product or service? You can, with permission only, use this content to repost. If you are tracking who uses your hashtags, you can contact those people direct and ask them for permission.  Either use the comments section of a post or send a direct message and ask if you can repost. Lots of brands promote hashtags specifically for ‘grammers’ to post, they then assume implied consent to use that content. It is a grey area and the best form of permission is explicit consent as we know. Ask away and repost!

Reports have stated that people trust the opinions of their peers more than brands themselves, so back that up and get your customers vouching for you.

Have a play with IGTV

Last June Instagram launched IGTV, a vertical video app that allows you to create longer play video from your phone. You can post to your instagram account and also watch within the main Instagram app. You can create your own channel and encourage people to follow this, have some fun and post some engaging content!
